Penn State Struggles to wrestle with the influence of Joe Paterno

This article seeks to weigh the influence, near mythical influence, of Joe Paterno over the way the Penn State commmunity has identified itself over the past several decades. It does so in view of the uneasy suspicion that the power Paterno wielded may have been used to cover horrific evils instead of being used to rescue young boys. It does so without judgment about Paterno's, or other Penn State officials' specific guilt, in the recent scandal. It does suggest there has been something unhealthy about the kind of influence Paterno has had and suggests the Penn State community may not be willing to face the facts of the case, or least not face them in the same way as it conceives of the school's identity.
